About Taniguchi Co., Ltd.
Loving wood, dedicated to wood, spreading the goodness of wood
Taniguchi's history is a history of challenges, beginning with a period of groping in the dark shortly after the end of World War II.
We continue to explore the possibilities of wood by blending our sensibilities with the needs of the times.
Since our founding in 1947, we at Taniguchi Co., Ltd. have been dedicated to working with wood. While engaging in the production of women's shoe heels and wooden umbrellas using a traditional lathe, we accumulated efforts and research to explore what wooden products would suit the changing times. This led us to the creation of Go bowls (containers for Go stones). The Go bowls, which our founder Shotaro Taniguchi poured his passion into, now account for 60% of the market share in Japan.
We take pride in this achievement and strive to create products that pass on the traditional craftsmanship to the next generation. However, as times change, so do the needs of our customers. We realized that merely inheriting the old ways of manufacturing would leave us behind. Therefore, we decided to dispel our preconceptions and rules about wood and integrate new sensibilities of the era. This led to the birth of "Sewable Wood" in 2009. The development of "Sewable Wood," which pursued the possibilities of wood, incorporated both new ideas and traditional techniques. Even in products that respond to the needs of the times, the skills cultivated by craftsmen are still alive and well.
We possess the expertise and knowledge necessary to process Japan's finest wood species.
The materials used for our wooden crafts are sourced from Japan's finest wood species. At our company, we handle the entire process in-house, from selecting the raw lumber to sawing, drying, processing, and finishing. The ability to determine the most suitable material for each product and adjust the thickness according to the tree species, thereby optimizing the unique characteristics of the wood, is a testament to the skills of our experienced craftsmen.
When selecting materials, knowledge that can only be cultivated through experience is essential, such as considering the appearance of the wood grain and assessing the degree of drying. Furthermore, as wood is a product of nature, each piece has its own individuality, and sometimes there are tree species with unique grain patterns. Every wooden craft product undergoes final finishing by the hands of our skilled artisans.
【Handling Japan's Finest Wood Species】
We work with renowned Japanese wood varieties such as black persimmon, tamo ash, horse chestnut, cherry, cedar, cypress, zelkova, and more, overseeing the entire processing journey from start to finish.
Sewable Wood
Sewable Wood History
"Sewable Wood" is a product that overturns the fixed concept of wood being rigid. The inspiration for its development came from thin wood shavings used for lampshades. The wood, sliced so thinly that light could pass through, sparked a sense of new possibilities.
After repeated trial and error and a decade of development, "Sewable Wood" was born. Despite being wood, it is soft enough to be folded, yet still maintains its strength. It also possesses durability that can withstand several rounds of washing. Above all, it retains the unique beauty of wood grain and the aroma of wood. This astonishing new material, which surprises everyone, has opened the door to new forms of expression using wood.
